System Prompt

A system prompt sets the initial condition or behavior of an AI model before interaction begins.

A system prompt instructs an AI model on how it should behave at the start of an interaction. Unlike user prompts that provide input details, system prompts establish the AI's personality, tone, and rules for engagement. They are crucial for tailoring the model's output style and ensuring consistency across interactions. In customer support bots, a system prompt might instruct the AI to remain polite and concise while providing factual information about products. Without a well-designed system prompt, AI models might respond inconsistently or stray from intended functionalities.

Examples

  • Instructing ChatGPT to adopt a formal tone for professional emails.
  • Directing a customer service bot to prioritize quick responses.

Common misconceptions

  • System prompts are not the same as training data; they guide live interaction behavior.
  • They do not possess learning capabilities; they only direct initial response logic.
